As well as teaching a life skill which helps keep arthritis at bay, reduces stress and aids mental health, it is also a way of reconnecting people to what they wear. A reminder of how long it takes to make something; to aid mindful consumption and help in some small way to start a slow clothing revolution, which our planet desperately needs. I learned to knit age five, my mother taught me, but after the birth of my first child and one baby train jumper later, life and work got in the way of craft, until I arrived here on the English coast. Five years ago picked up my needles again. I’ve now taught many people to knit plus arm and finger knit, and hope one day to have knitting brought back to schools to aid fine motor skills which our children lack in this digital age. Knitting is a binary language and helps children to learn to code, which is a wonderful amalgamation of old and new skills meeting.
